Husky Sled Ride

Meet the Kilpisjärvi Husky Team! Siberian huskies are friendly and they adore meeting people and pulling the sled. That’s their hobby and that’s their work!

You and your traveling companions can now learn how to be a ”musher”. Meet your guide Martti, the owner of the husky team, on the lakeshore. Martti will teach you how to control the sled – and before you know it you’ll be off, ”mushing” the husky team, heading towards the Swedish shore. The others in your party will follow you by snowmobile, seated comfortably in the passenger sled while the guide drives. You’ll be on your own with the huskies, each person in your party taking his or her turn as the musher. A youngster can be seated in the dogsled while the parent acts as musher.

At the turn-around point a break is taken, and you’ll have a chance to get acquainted with each husky – they are so excited at the start that longer introductions may not have been possible. A hot berry juice is served during the break. The trip lasts approximately one hour, the total distance covered is nearly 10 km and 1 – 4 persons can be accommodated at a time.

Snowshoe Trek in the Borderland of Kilpisjärvi

Once ready with the equipment you’re off, following the guide, uphill towards a vantage point, admiring the snow-covered nature while trekking at a comfortable pace.

Regardless of weather conditions, a snowshoe trek is a delightful experience: from early winter and the soft colors of the polar night to the spring days which are filled with light. Snowfall or sunshine, a snowshoeing trip is an authentic rendez-vous with Lapland’s nature.

The Arctic Evening Experience

Are you planning a trip to the Arctic in search of Northern Lights? If you wish to maximize your chances to view this mesmerizing natural phenomenon, also known as Aurora Borealis, you should consider spending a few days in Kilpisjärvi.

Statistically the village of Kilpisjärvi is a great choice – the northern lights appear here more frequently than anywhere else in Lapland. While staying here you may catch sight of Aurora Borealis without going far from your accommodations – a short walk takes you away from any light pollution. But if you want to venture out further and experience the arctic night in the nature, join our evening tour to the wilderness.

The tour starts with a snowmobile passenger sled transfer from the village center. You’ll be seated comfortably on cushions, wrapped in blankets, while your guide pilots the machine towards the darkness. At the destination, which is a basic wilderness camp, you spend the evening marveling at the sights and sounds of the arctic nighttime nature and anticipating ”Lady Aurora’s” mood. Will she dance tonight?
Hot beverages and a tasty snack will be served to you by your guide during the course of the evening.

Operation: Scheduled departures December 1 – March 28
Price: € 55 / person
Price Includes: Guiding, transportation in snowmobile passenger sled, hot beverages and a snack by open fire (coffee, tea, berry juice, roasted sausage, pastry)

The Tundra Experience

The village of Kilpisjärvi is perched on the edge of the vast Käsivarsi Wilderness Area in northwestern Lapland. Getting to the wilderness is easiest and safest in the company of a professional guide. The panoramic vistas and the tranquility of this remote area create a unique experience.

There are no roads in the wilderness, and motorized vehicles are limited to snowmobiles driven by locals and licensed guides. You’ll be comfortably seated in the guide’s snowmobile passenger sled, enjoying the ride and the views as he skillfully steers the vehicle towards the tundra.

Soon after leaving the village you ascend above the tree line. The trail leads you across amazing barren landscapes which seem to stretch into infinity. You might spot a reindeer herd on its winter pasture, a dog musher training his team or snowmobilers on a day’s outing.

During the trip you can try your hand at ice fishing – the guide provides the equipment and instruction, but if fishing is not your thing, just sit back, enjoy the exotic views and the peaceful atmosphere and take pictures.
